Mazda has announced specifications for the
significantly improved 2019 MX-5 Miata ahead of its Japanese launch on July
26th. Starting under the hood, the 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G engine has been
“drastically revised” as it has been equipped with an optimized air intake, new
cylinder heads, revised pistons and different connecting rods. Mazda says these
modifications were made to increase performance while also reducing weight.
The company was coy on the latter figure but the
updated engine now produces “15% or more” horsepower. In addition, torque has
increased for the “whole revolution range” and the redline climbs from 6,800
rpm to 7,500 rpm. While the Japanese press release didn’t mention specific
outputs, a data sheet revealed the engine will produce 184 PS and 205 Nm of torque.
That’s a significant boost over the 2018 model which
is rated at 157 PS and 200 Nm of torque in the
United States. Besides being more powerful, the upgraded engine is more
eco-friendly and fuel-efficient.
The 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-G engine has also been
improved with combustion technology developed for the 2.0-liter unit. It now
produces 132 PS and 152 Nm of torque. The mill
also offers improved fuel-efficiency and better environmental performance.
Additional changes are limited but the car adopts a
new telescopic steering wheel and a revised TFT display. Customers will also be
able to order a brown soft top, a tan leather interior and 16-inch aluminum
wheels with black metallic accents.
Also, the car offers
additional standard safety equipment in Japan. Highlights include Advanced
Smart City Brake Support and a Lane Departure Warning System. When the model
goes on sale next month, Japanese pricing will start at ¥ 2,554,200 (US$ 23,218)
and climb to ¥ 3,812,400 (US$ 34,636) for the range-topping MX-5 Miata RF.
