A prototype of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLE
has been snapped by Autokult during testing on the streets of Prague. Like previous prototypes, this
one is covered by a thin layer of white and black camouflage that offers an
almost unimpeded view of the SUV’s shape. Unfortunately, key details like the
front grille as well as the headlights and taillights still aren’t visible in
full.
With this being said, a close look at the rear
fascia does offer a reasonable view of the taillights and the new shape they
will adopt. Not only do they seem quite a bit smaller than the units of the
existing GLE, the taillights have a shape reminiscent of those on the
latest-generation CLS.
Thanks to leaks and drawings, we already know what
the interior of the all-new SUV will look like: quite fresh, with a huge
display for the dials and infotainment system, as well as grab handles either
side of the console.
The new-age GLE’s European range is
tipped to start with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six petrol engine mated to
a 48V mild-hybrid system for a combined output of 380 hp. Buyers in the U.S.
and China will be offered a more affordable model, with a turbocharged
2.0-liter petrol offering between 240 and 250 hp.
In typical Mercedes-Benz SUV fashion, a selection of
powerful V8s will also be offered, both in AMG and non-AMG guises, and there’ll
also be a host of diesels as well as a plug-in hybrid.
