We’ve always known that the latest-generation Ford
Mustang GT500 would be an absolute animal but few specifics about the car have
been made public. Now, thanks to a leak uncovered by Mustang6g, we have some
juicy details to share.
For starters, the document states that the Mustang
GT500 will use a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine, as long expected. Thanks to
Ford Performance’s wizardry, this powertrain will deliver 720 hp and 650 lb-ft
of torque while revving through to 7500 rpm. The document doesn’t say what
transmission the pony car will use but does confirm that all the grunt will be
sent through the rear wheels.
Elsewhere, the leak shows that the car will max out
at an impressive 305 km/h and come complete with a carbon fiber
driveshaft. These details all sound very promising. Sadly, there’s one massive
elephant in the room; weight. This document asserts that the Mustang GT500 has a curb weight of 1,916 kg. That’s roughly 200 kg heavier than the GT350 and
almost as much as the porky Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat.
In May, a spy video of the Mustang GT500 surfaced,
revealing a prototype outfitted with some kind of automatic transmission. The
most likely option is Ford and GM’s 10-speed ‘box, already used by the likes of
the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Alternatively, some claim that a racing-derived
dual-clutch like the seven-speed of the Ford GT could be used.
All shall be revealed next year at the car’s debut.
