Patent images showing the upcoming BMW 8-Series Gran
Coupe and Convertible have surfaced online thanks to Dutch publication Auto
Visie. While we had seen a couple of rendered patent images earlier in the
summer, this time, we get a full look at both body styles.
BMW recently confirmed that the
two new 8-Series variants will launch in 2019 and these images reveal that the
two will sport many of the same eye-catching design elements as the 8-Series
Coupes.
Unquestionably the most attractive of the two is the
BMW 8-Series Convertible as it retains largely the same sleek and aggressive
shape as the hardtop. Consequently, the front and rear fascias have gone
untouched.
However, the softtop does somewhat diminish the vehicle’s sexy
profile but we doubt owners cruising along mountain roads with the roof down
will care about this.
As for the 8-Series Gran Coupe, it looks just as odd
and fat as models like the 3-Series Gran Coupe and 5-Series Gran Coupe. That
means there’s still that familiar elongated roofline and bloated rear fascia.
Fortunately, the appealing headlights and taillights found elsewhere in the
8-Series range are retained and do somewhat make up for the weird design of the
roof.
In confirming an 8-Series Convertible and Gran Coupe
earlier this month, the German manufacturer revealed that they will be
available in both non-M and M-specifications. With that in mind, we anticipate
both the Convertible and Gran Coupe to be initially offered in M850i and 840d specifications.
After that, an M8 Convertible and M8 Gran Coupe will launch, providing wealthy
BMW customers with a plethora of options to choose from.
The 8-Series will completely replace the 6-Series
once all the aforementioned models hit the market.
