Fresh off its
dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Brabham has announced the BT62
will celebrate its North American unveiling at Monterey Car Week. The
high-performance model will be on display at the Michelin stand at Laguna Seca
and the car will also make appearances at McCall’s Motorworks Revival and the
Exotics on Cannery Row. To celebrate its debut in the United States, the car
will be sport a special livery which pays tribute to Dan Gurney who was the
first driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix in a Brabham race car.
As part of the
tribute, the car has been designed to mimic the Brabham BT7 that Gurney drove
to victory in the French Grand Prix of 1964. As a result, it will feature a
green and gold exterior with “22” discs.
Besides announcing
plans to show the BT62 in California, Brabham announced it has received the
first order from a North American customer. The company didn’t say who
purchased the car or what country they’re from, but the automaker confirmed the
model was sold for Us$ 1.3 (£ 1 / € 1.1) million.
That’s pretty
steep, but the BT62 is a track-only supercar that features an aggressive design
and a carbon fiber body. The lightweight construction enables the car to weigh
972 kg and the aerodynamic components allow the model to develop
more than 1,200 kg of downforce.
Power is provided
by a mid-mounted 5.4-liter V8 engine that produces 700 hp and 666 Nm of torque. It is connected to a six-speed sequential
transmission which is controlled by steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.
Production will be
limited to 70 units and it appears the company isn’t having problems finding
buyers.
