Is a new Land Rover
coming in the near future? Probably, as JLR has applied to trademark a new
moniker: Road Rover. AutoExpress have brought this news
forward, speculating that it could be pretty much everything at this point.
From a PR stunt to
a potential new product, the Road Rover moniker might also suggest a high
riding estate is coming to rival the likes of the Audi A6 Allroad,
Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain and Volvo V90 Cross Country. Then again, it
could be a luxury sedan – at this point, everything is mere speculation.
This
isn’t Land Rover’s first use of the Road Rover name, as back in the 1950s, they
came up with a few prototypes of a car bearing the same name, which was
eventually shelved.
Autocar, on the
other hand, goes further, suggesting that if given the green light for
production, then the Road Rover will challenge the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in
terms of luxury and high-end features. And since it will come from JLR, it’s
expected to have some off-road capabilities.
As for power, the
British mag suggests a dual-motor electric system providing all-wheel drive and
allowing it to reach 96 km/h in less than 5 seconds. Backed up by a
potent battery, the Road Rover could travel for at least 483 km in
between charges.
Even if a new
vehicle is coming, don’t expect to see it before at least early next decade,
and hopefully by then we’ll have much more to report on what JLR is cooking.
