Following its
reveal at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the US$ 1.8-million Singer Dynamics and
Lightweighting Study (DLS) show car is set to visit this year’s Pebble Beach
for its North American debut. Singer’s latest creation was developed together
with Williams Advanced Engineering with consultation from legendary Porsche
engineer Hans Mezger; the reason for this was to create the world’s best
air-cooled six-cylinder engine and just by reading the specs, it appears
they’ve done it: a four-valve per
cylinder, four-camshaft, naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six producing 500
hp at an incredible 9,000rpm.
The DLS is still
based on a Porsche 964 but everything has been updated or replaced with no
expense spared. The lever for the bespoke Hewland six-speed manual gearbox now
sits higher and closer to the steering wheel, thanks to the custom exposed
linkage. The gearbox uses magnesium casings with hollow shafts in order to
reduce the rotating mass.
Wherever you look,
there’s carbon, metal and leather blended beautifully, which to some people is
enough to justify the insane price tag. This includes details like the
carbon-fiber bucket seats from Recaro, a carbon steering wheel from Momo, a
carbon-fiber instrument panel and more.
The impressive
bodywork has been completely re-engineered, with Singer claiming that
front-axle lift has been now eliminated thanks to a new front splitter and
optimised air vents, a new roof channel and a much more effective ducktail rear
spoiler.
Singer intends to
build just 75 examples of the DLS, so if you have near US$ 2 million to spare and
a burning desire for the finest 911 out there, you better hurry.
