Volkswagen’s crossover family has increased to the
point where it counts three members: the Touareg, Tiguan and T-Roc, and a
fourth one, the T-Cross, is expected this fall. Snapped testing at the
Nurburgring recently, the smallest Volkswagen SUV will enter the ever-crowded
subcompact segment, where it will have to do battle with the likes of the
Hyundai Kona, Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur and Nissan Juke.
Judging by the latest spy video, the T-Cross looks
just about ready for its big premiere. It has shed a lot of camouflage compared
to previous scoops, and once all of it will come off, it will likely reveal
headlamps similar to those of the larger Tiguan, flanking the signature grille
seen on the brand’s latest products.
The T-Cross will share most of its interior with the
Polo, on which it is based, and borrow some cues from the larger T-Roc. Thus,
expect a similar dashboard layout, with an infotainment screen sitting in the
middle and probably a digital instrument cluster in higher-end models. As far as the engine range is
concerned, the 1.0-liter TSI, 1.5-liter TSI and 2.0-liter TSI petrol units
should be part of the offerings, alongside the 1.6-liter TDI and 2.0-liter TDI
diesels.
It’s unlikely that the German automaker will offer
any electrified powertrains, given that the T-Cross will serve as their entry
into the SUV lineup. Production of the vehicle will take place in Brazil, as previously
confirmed, and sales should commence before the end of 2018.
