BMW is finally getting ready to throw the ball back into the yards of Mercedes-Benz and Audi with the 2-Series Gran Coupe. The car is already under development and was said to gain a full-blown M derivative, powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, most likely the one used in the M2 Competition.

This unit is the same as the one used in the M3 and M4, albeit detuned to 410 PS and 550 Nm of torque. It allows the M2 Competition to sprint to 100 km/h in 4.2sec with the dual-clutch gearbox, or 4.4sec with the manual, and max out at 250 km/h or 274 km/h with the limiter removed.

The M2 Gran Coupe would go after the Audi RS3 Sedan and next-gen Mercedes-AMG CLA 45. However, it seems that BMW might not offer such a model after all, according to a report that appeared on BMWBlog, which claims that the M235i (name unconfirmed) will be the most potent Gran Coupe.

It’s supposed to arrive with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, said to be shared with the upcoming M Performance version of the X2, with 300 PS and 400 Nm of torque, plus xDrive all-wheel drive. If this is indeed the case, then the M235i Gran Coupe will target the Audi S3 Sedan and Mercedes-AMG CLA 35.
