BMW has finally taken the wraps off the new Z4,
which as expected remains faithful to last year’s concept car and ditches the
folding hard-top for a more traditional canvas roof. The car debuted at Pebble Beach
in its range-topping M40i guise, meaning there’s a 3.0-liter six-cylinder
engine sitting under the long bonnet with 335 hp. Being a member of the
M Performance range also means that the chassis features a more
driver-inspiring setup, with a M tuned sports suspension with active dampers,
bigger brakes and an electronically controlled rear differential.
BMW kept most of the official details and figures
out of its press release, holding them for an announcement on September 18. The
Bavarian car maker just said that the new BMW Z4 M40i is capable of a 0-96 km/h in 4.4 seconds.
The special First Edition of the new Bavarian
roadster will come with specific design and equipment features to make it more
exclusive; things like the Frozen Orange Metallic paint, the High Gloss Shadow
Line, the black exterior mirror caps, the 19-inch two-tone alloys and the
anthracite soft top with silver effect are some of the First Edition’s exterior
cues.
The interior of the new BMW Z4 First Edition
features Vernasca Black leather with decorative stitching, electrically
operated seats, a Harman Kardon Surround System, BMW’s latest Live Cockpit
setup that combines two HD digital displays for the instrument cluster and the
infotainment, as well as a head-up display, which is a first for a BMW
roadster.
The new 2019 BMW Z4 shared some time with the rest
of the Z family, which goes back thirty years ago, with the introduction of the
original Z1 and includes not only the previous generations of the Z3 and Z4 but
also the limited Z8.
BMW will launch the new Z4 in the U.S. in spring of
2019, in the form of the four-cylinder 30i model. The range-topping M40i
derivative of the new BMW Z4, including the First Edition, is expected to
arrive in the second quarter of the year.
