Rolls-Royce takes pride in ensuring they have
not only a smooth and quiet ride, but also a discreet one. The company has
always been proud of the fact that the rear compartment of a Rolls-Royce
affords its customers the “luxury of privacy.”
From now on, that luxury will become even more
obvious as Rolls-Royce has introduced at the 2018 Chengdu Motor Show today the
“Privacy Suite” for the new Extended Wheelbase Phantom. Essentially, the new option
allows the front and rear cabins to be visually separated at the touch of a
button thanks to the integration of Electrochromatic Glass. Rear occupants have
the option to see through the glass and on to the road ahead or to instantly
make the glass opaque for a superior level of privacy.
Also new are the Rear Privacy Curtains, which allow
the full closure of the side and rear windows, and the Rear Privacy Glass,
which extends discretion when the curtains are open. Rolls-Royce says the Privacy
Suite is a leap forward in sound absorption as well, on a car that is already
considered as the quietest in the world. Furthermore, while a fully integrated
Intercom System allows communication on demand, a frequency-specific compound
“inhibits the transmission of conversations in the rear cabin to the front
cabin.”
Should the driver want to contact the rear
passengers when the “privacy mode” is on, all he or she has to do is “call”
them. Obviously, they can choose to answer or reject the communication. Adding to the strong points of
Rolls-Royce‘s Privacy Suite is a large aperture controlled exclusively by the
rear passenger that allows documents or other objects to be passed between the
front and rear cabins. When open, the compartment is subtly illuminated to
ensure passengers agree with the nature of items before receiving them.
Finally, the Privacy Suite also includes a Bespoke
Rear Theatre Entertainment system, which features two 12-inch monitors linked to
the car’s software, as well as an HDMI port. The system is deployed and
controlled from the center console.
