The Porsche 718 Boxster range will soon get a new
range-topper in the form of the Boxster Spyder, and the rumour mill suggests
that it will get a naturally-aspirated flat-six engine instead of a turbo
flat-four.
Performance should come from the 4.0 litre six-cylinder engine
plucked from the existing 991.2-gen 911 GT3, albeit downtuned to the region of
400 hp. Comparatively, its predecessor was motivated by a 3.8 litre flat-six
making 375 hp, enough for a 0-100 km/h sprint of 4.5 seconds and 290 km/h top
speed, but the new Boxster Spyder should be quicker.
The spy pictures below include multiple sightings of
the car in various prototype bodies, which gave birth to reports stating that
the new model could be a heavily reworked version of the previous 981-gen
Boxster Spyder.
Expect the most powerful Boxster model to be the
lightest as well, and that familiar twin bulges that graduate into the tailgate
(a tribute to the original 718 Spyder from the 60s) and the manual soft-top
(for weight saving purposes) should continue to be featured as well.
Elsewhere, it should get a stiffer and lower sports
suspension, revised chassis and the usual suite of Porsche driving assistance
systems. The 981-gen Boxster Spyder was solely available with a six-speed
manual transmission, but Porsche could offer a seven-speed PDK this time around.
