The G22-generation BMW 4 Series Cabriolet has been
spotted running road tests, where it was previously spotted by Paultan spy
photographers on the back of a trailer.
Here, we get a closer look at the al fresco 4 Series
that has ditched the folding hardtop of previous generations for the
traditional fabric soft-top, a move that has weight- and space-saving benefits,
particularly in luggage capacity. Through the camouflage, we can also see that
the kidney grille in front features the little pins in place of the traditional
vertical slats, as seen on the G29 Z4.
As before, the forthcoming 4 Series convertible will
feature an engine line-up that basically mirrors that of the the 3 Series,
which in its latest G20 guise continues to be powered by four- and six-cylinder
engines. These begin with a 2.0 litre unit producing between 184 hp and 300 Nm
of torque, onwards to 258 hp and 400 Nm of torque in a higher state of tune.
The soft-top has been tipped to feature a plug-in hybrid as well.
Assuming the 4 Series convertible also gets the
turbo six-pot from the M340i, this will be paired with the firm’s xDrive all-wheel-drive
system as well; in the sedan, this produces 374 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The
equipment list should similarly follow that of the G20 3 Series, which includes
the Digital Key, an NFC key card, Connected Navigation with Parking Space
Assistant and Remote Software Update, among others. These and more will also be in
the G23 4 Series Coupe, which has also been tipped to makes its debut in 2020,
around the time the soft-top G22 4 Series makes its official appearance.
