Ford’s Australian division has dropped a teaser
image of the Ford Mustang it will soon race in the country’s popular Supercars
Championship. The image shows a prototype with a unique blue and white camouflage
wrap and gives us a look at the racer’s headlights, front grille, and hood
vents.
When production of the Ford Falcon ended in
Australia, it was thought that the Supercars grid would soon lose all of its
Fords. However, Ford Performance and DJR Team Penske confirmed in April that the
Mustang would be turned into a Supercars racer and take to the grid.
No less than seven Ford Mustang are expected to
compete in next year’s Supercars Championship. Two will be fielded by DJR Team
Penske, four will be raced by Tickford Racing and one entry will come from
23Red Racing.
The teaser has been released in the lead-up to the
Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 this weekend where Ford will celebrate the
Falcon’s heritage. It will also bring its GT racer to the circuit and pit it
against a Falcon Supercar and Mustang GT4 in an exciting speed comparison.
The Ford Mustang will be the first two-door vehicle
to compete in the Supercars Championship since the Gen 2 vehicles were
introduced in 2017. Under these new regulations, teams can compete with
two-door coupes as well as turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines. Holden
was developing its first twin-turbocharged V6 for the series but axed the
project earlier this year to focus on its existing V8s.
Walkinshaw Andretti United wants to race the
two-door Chevrolet Camaro in the Supercars Championship in 2020.
