A prototype of the Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet, which
has been tipped to make its debut in 2020, has been sighted undergoing road
tests in Germany. It’s still completely camouflaged, but the test mule stays
true to the original sketch that was revealed earlier this year.
Essentially, it’s a T-Roc shorn of its rear doors
and metal roof, and in their place is a folding fabric top and a very short
rear deck. Expect the Cabriolet to come with the same range of three petrol and
three diesel engines as the standard T-Roc, with outputs ranging between 115 PS
and 190 PS. For transmission, there should also be the option of either a
six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission, as well
as the 4Motion all-wheel drive system on certain models.
While photos of its cabin remain elusive for the
time being, expect the same high-tech features such as the 11.7-inch Active
Info Display, inductive charging for smartphones, Beats-tuned 300-watt sound
system, Apple Carplay and Android Auto functionalities to be carried over from
the regular T-Roc. A 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system should be standard,
although this should be upgradable to the glass-encased eight-inch Composition
Media system with CD player and Discover Media system (also an eight-inch
touchscreen) with navigation function.
The T-Roc range could be crowned with a
high-performance R variant, which is said to be powered by the same EA888 2.0
litre TSI engine used in the Golf R, with outputs likely in the 310 PS range.
This engine could also be used in the Tiguan R and Arteon R, although whether
it will be in the same state of tune is not confirmed.
