For people who need a brand new convertible Tesla in
their lives, options are limited to the second-generation Roadster. However, there may be two major
drawbacks to that car: deliveries won’t begin until 2020 and prices start at US$ 200,000. Sure, there’s always the alternative of buying a used
first-generation Roadster, but even Elon Musk said that car was a disaster
reliability-wise. So, what other options are there on the table?
Well, one can always ask a coachbuilding expert to
convert a Tesla Model 3 or Model S into a cabriolet. While we haven’t seen a
Model 3 convertible yet, there have been some attempts at chopping the roof off
the Model S.
The latest company to try that is Ares Design and
this design sketch is a clear sign of what’s to come. Previewed on its social
media channels, the Tesla S Roadster by Ares Design certainly looks like an
enticing proposition.
Why this is so enticing is simply because no one has
ever attempted to convert the Model S into a two-door, two-seat roadster — all
the other Model S convertibles we’ve seen so far have kept the four doors and
two rows of seats.
For now, the Modena-based coachbuilder isn’t very
generous with the details. It only says it “will take all its knowledge and
creativity into the all-electric cars universe, designing an exciting Roadster
version of the Tesla Model S.”
If the sketch is anything to go by, Ares Design’s S
Roadster will certainly look exciting. As for whether it can actually impact
sales of Tesla’s own Roadster, that all depends on the conversion price and
release date.
