Hyundai has announced pricing for the 2019 Kona
Electric crossover in the United States and the good news is it starts at just
under US$ 30,000 when the maximum available federal tax credit is included. The base price is US$ 36,450,
excluding the US$ 1,045 destination and handling charge. Factor in the (still)
available federal tax credit of up to US$ 7,500 and you can get a 2019 Kona
Electric from US$ 29,995 (including delivery charges).
That is undeniably a tempting price for an
all-electric vehicle that delivers a 415-km driving range. The Kona
Electric beats competitors such as the Chevrolet Bolt EV (383 km) and
Nissan Leaf (241 km). Furthermore, it offers more than twice the
driving range of the Ford Focus Electric (185 km) and VW e-Golf (201 km).
The 2019 Kona Electric packs a 64-kWh lithium-ion
battery with a high density of 141.3 Wh/kg that feeds electricity to an
electric motor delivering 201 hp and 394 Nm of torque.
Recharging the battery overnight takes 9 hours and 35 minutes using a 7.2 kW
Level 2 onboard charger. For a quicker charge, the battery can reach 80-percent
capacity in 54 minutes using a Level 3 quick charger.
Hyundai’s first compact electric crossover for the
U.S. market rides on an all-new CUV platform and is built in Ulsan, Korea. The
2019 Kona Electric will be available early next year, initially in California
and later in the ZEV-focused states in the western and northeastern regions of
the United States. Pricing for other Kona Electric trims will be announced shortly.
