The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is off to a slow start, but the model could see renewed interest thanks to the unveiling of the Jetta GLI. Autoblog is reporting the performance-oriented model will be debut at the Chicago Auto Show which kicks off on February 7th.

Little is known about the Jetta GLI, but a Volkswagen representative has previously said the car will eschew the standard model’s torsion-beam rear suspension for a more modern multi-link setup. The representative also confirmed the car will have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but declined to provide performance specifications.

While Volkswagen is staying tight-lipped, the Jetta GLI is expected to use the same engine as the Golf GTI. It produces 220 hp and 349 Nm of torque and this would be a big improvement over the Jetta’s turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder which churns out 147 hp and 249 Nm of torque. While the standard model is available with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, the GLI is expected to be offered with a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Like its predecessor, the 2020 Jetta GLI is slated to have sportier styling inside and out. As a result, we can expect unique bumpers, revised side skirts and a honeycomb mesh grille. Volkswagen do Brasil head of design, José Carlos Pavone, has also said the model will have five-spoke alloy wheels and a black roof.

Interior changes will likely be more modest, but drivers should find alloy pedals, a flat-bottom steering wheel and sport seats. Other updates could include revised trim and upholstery as well as plenty of GLI badging.
