An update on the Borgward BX5, which was supposed to
have been launched at the end of September. The SUV is in the process of obtaining
its final approval from the government, and an accompanying photo shows a
R&D unit apparently undergoing final road testing.
The five-seater, which measures in at 4,490 mm long,
1,877 mm wide and 1,675 mm tall, with a 2,685 mm-long wheelbase, was first
previewed locally in late April along with the BX7, a left-hand drive example
being the display vehicle.
The show BX5 was equipped with a 1.8 litre
turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 190 PS and 280 Nm, with power sent to
all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive
system. In China, there’s also a smaller 1.4 litre turbo option, which has 150
PS and 250 Nm for output numbers.
Local specifications had yet to be confirmed at the
time, and there hasn’t been any update on this front, so again it looks like
the kitbag for the MY-spec version will only be known at point of launch. It
was previously reported that the BX5 will be tentatively priced under RM 100k
and that it will be locally-assembled (CKD).
