Alongside
announcing the U.S.-spec 2020 Toyota Supra at the Detroit Auto Show 2019, the
automaker has dropped images and details of the European model. Curiously,
Toyota will build and deliver just 900 new Supra models for the European market
during the first year of the car’s launch. A special-edition model dubbed the
Supra A90 Edition will also be sold, limited to just 90 examples across the
continent.
Like the Supra
bound for the U.S., European models are offered exclusively with a 3.0-liter
turbocharged six-cylinder engine delivering 335 hp and 500 Nm of
torque. This engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and
drivers will have the option of Normal or Sport driving modes to suit their
tastes.
The Sport mode
adjusts the engine sound and response, shift pattern, damping, steering, and
active differential. There’s also a special Track setting for the Vehicle
Stability Control system that reduces the level of intervention when the sports
car is being driven at its limits. The new Supra also includes a Launch Control
function which helps the vehicle sprint to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.
Production will be capped in Europe at 900 examples during the first year.
Those lucky 900 owners “will be given access to an exclusive experience
programme and money-can’t-buy rewards in the lead-up to the delivery of their
car,” Toyota says.
All versions of the
2020 Toyota GR Supra sold across Europe will come with an active differential
as standard. This differential operates both when accelerating and decelerating
and can adjust from zero to full, 100 per cent locked virtually instantly. An
ECU dedicated to the differential continuously monitors steering wheel,
throttle and brake pedal operation, engine speed, and yaw rate to ensure the
differential works perfectly.
There are two Supra
grades offered in Europe: Active and Premium. The entry-level Toyota GR Supra
Active includes the aforementioned differential, Adaptive Variable Suspension,
and 19-inch forged alloy wheels with a high-performance brake package.
Additionally, the Active model includes dual-zone automatic air conditioning,
Adaptive Cruise Control, smart entry and push-button start as well as LED
headlights, rear lights, and daytime running lights. There’s also auto-dimming
mirrors.
Inside, the Supra
Active features a 10-speaker audio system and an 8.8-inch infotainment display
with Bluetooth and a USB port. As for the Supra Premium, it includes the same
features as the Active but adds black leather, a 12-speaker audio system from
JBL, heads-up display, and a wireless phone charger. Toyota will announce
European pricing shortly.
