Remember that Lamborghini Urus-like pickup sketch from a couple weeks back? It was meant to depict a real project car, based on a Toyota 86. In order to get everything ready in time for the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon, engineers at the Nihon Automobile College (NATS) have been hard at work trying to replicate that drawing on a full scale, in real life. So what will the final product look like? Perhaps a bit underwhelming, judging by these work-in-progress images.

Despite the sketch almost looking like a proper Urus pickup, we suspected that it would likely keep its sports car proportions, utilizing styling cues of the Italian super-SUV for dramatic purposes. ake for example how massive the front end mods looked in the drawing compared to what the custom bumper actually looks like in real life. Even though it’s clearly unfinished, the bumper is visibly smaller, as are the gaps between the actual nose of the car and the mid-spoiler section. Basically, it’s not as imposing as we would have hoped for.

The profile looks a bit different as well in reality, though it’s still being worked on at this stage. As for the rear end, it actually sweeps upwards instead of downwards, looking less “Lamborghini Ute” and more “Toyota 86 dune buggy”. At least they did widen the body considerably, which should help the vehicle look more planted.

In the end, powering this project car will be a modified version of the Toyota 86’s and Subaru BRZ’s 2.0-liter petrol unit, good for 270 PS and 304 Nm of torque. The 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon kicks off this Friday, January 11th.
