Van drivers are having a hard time staying fit given
the long hours they spend sat behind the wheel. Finding time to hit the gym can
be tough for them, as van drivers spend an average of 2.89 hours each day in
the driver’s seat, according to a survey from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles
UK. Obviously, that can slow the metabolism and weaken the muscles and
bones, which is why VW is eager to prove van drivers they don’t need to go to
the gym — all they need for a workout is their van.
For the New Year, a time when the annual rush to the
gym begins, VW Commercial Vehicles has created a mobile workout for van drivers
using a Transporter and common tools found in most vans. Called “Working Out
With You,” the exercise regime can be completed anywhere, anytime, with the
Mobile Gym Transporter.
The program, which is designed to tackle different
muscle groups for a well-rounded workout, has been devised by VW with fleet
customer Pimlico Plumbers and its in-house personal trainer, James Dean. The good thing about the program
is it doesn’t require an expensive gym membership or expensive equipment. The
training regime uses the VW Transporter’s body panels and load bay for moves
such as the “Bumper Dips” and “Panel Push-Ups,” as well as everyday tools and
gear for exercises such as the “Pipe Clean & Press” and “Toolbox Squat
& Raise.”
There are six routines in total. Van driver or not, don’t forget that health
experts recommend doing at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity such
as cycling or brisk walking every week. Additionally, they advise doing
strength exercises that work all the major muscles two or more days a week.
