Opel has released the first teaser image of the 2020
Corsa. Set to be unveiled later this year, the redesigned hatchback will
feature stylish new IntelliLux LED matrix headlights. Noticeably sleeker than
the current lighting units, the headlights have an evolutionary design with
lower LED daytime running lights.
The teaser image also gives us a glimpse of the
Corsa’s new bodywork. There isn’t much to see, but the picture suggests the car
will adopt streamlined styling with sharper lines. Opel didn’t say much else about
the model, but noted “We celebrate #Opel120 years of automobile production – by
continuing to offer high-tech for everyone! The next generation #OpelCorsa not
only goes electric, it puts other lights in the shade – with IntelliLux #LED
matrix light!”
While Opel is staying coy on details, the Corsa will
ride on CMP platform which will underpin an assortment of compact city cars (B
segment), sedans (C segment) and compact crossovers from Citroën, DS, Peugeot,
Opel and Vauxhall. Besides the Corsa, the platform will also be used on the
2020 Peugeot 208. The Corsa is expected to be offered with an assortment of
turbocharged three- and four-cylinder engines. Opel has also confirmed plans
for an electric variant which could be called the eCorsa. The model will go
into production in 2020 and be built in Spain.
When the CMP platform was originally announced, PSA
said electric vehicles based on the architecture would come equipped with a 50
kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor that develops 134 hp. The 2020 Corsa is expected to be launched late this year, so expect
to learn more in the coming months.
