Alfa Romeo might be two weeks away from unveiling
a brand new SUV of compact dimensions. Quoting information received from an
insider, AutoBlogGR states that the Stelvio’s smaller sibling will be presented
at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.
We’ll take this
information with the proverbial pinch of salt, as it’s only a rumor.
Nonetheless, we reached out to FCA hoping to find out more about it, so
depending on what they have to say, we’ll either update this post or come back
with a new one.
Announced last
summer in Alfa’s official road map, this new compact SUV is thought to ride on
a smaller version of the Grigio platform, shared with the Giulia and Stelvio.
This will ensure standard rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive, as
well as electrified powertrains. At the top of the range, clients should expect
a high-performance PHEV, with around 400 horsepower.
Another report
claimed that the yet-unnamed compact SUV might share its nuts and bolts with
the Jeep Renegade which, in turn, uses the same underpinnings as the Fiat 500X,
500L and Toro. We wouldn’t bet on it though, as the shrunken Grigio
architecture would probably be the best candidate for the job.
Aside from the
upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1 and Audi Q3 rival, Alfa Romeo has a flagship
SUV in the pipeline as well. It will challenge the likes of the GLE, X5 and Q7,
and based on previous reports, which also claimed the compact SUV would arrive
in 2020, the flagship is expected in 2021.
