Porsche unveiled the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport
earlier this year and it looks like the road-going version will debut at the
Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. The
2020 718 Cayman GT4 will come with a naturally-aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six
engine that produces approximately 420 hp. This would put the
model on par with the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport which also uses a 3.8-liter
engine that develops 419 hp and 425 Nm of torque.
While the race car is only available with a
six-speed PDK transmission, the road-going model will reportedly be available
exclusively with a manual transmission at launch. However, a PDK gearbox is
rumored to become optional in late 2020.
Performance specifications should be taken with a
grain of salt, but the report suggests the car will be able to accelerate from 0-100 km/h)in 4.0 seconds, before hitting a top speed in excess of 297 km/h. To put those numbers into perspective, the
previous-generation Cayman GT4 was able to rocket from 0-100 km/h in
4.4 seconds and onto a top speed of 295 km/h.
Part of this improved performance is due to
substantial weight saving measures which will reportedly enable the car to drop 50 kg. That’s a significant mass reduction and engineers have
reportedly be able to achieve this by using thinner glass, installing
“hollow-spoke wheels” and substituting heavy materials for lighter weight
components. That’s pretty vague and it remains unclear if the road-going model
will use natural-fiber components like the Cayman GT4 Clubsport.
Regardless, the 718 Cayman GT4 will help usher in
the summer with UK prices likely starting in excess of £ 90,000.
