The Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport will get its own
one-make racing series, with the first race scheduled for the weekend of the 24
Hours of Spa on July 26-27. Porsche made the announcement shortly after racing veteran Mark Webber
drove the 911 GT2 RS Clubsport at the Bathurst 12 Hour race in what was its
first public demonstration run.
SportsCar365 reports that the Porsche-exclusive race
at Spa will be a prelude to the introduction of a new GT2 category launched by
SRO Motorsport Group. The new GT2 formula is expected to feature in the
Blancpain GT Sports Club and will race alongside the existing GT3 class in
Europe, America, and Asia.
At least six brands have expressed interest in the
GT2 category, but Porsche is the only manufacturer so far to have actually
launched such a car.
Porsche intends on capping production of the GT2 RS
Clubsport to 200 units. It is powered by the 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six of
the road car, pumping out an identical 690 hp. Changes over the street legal
version include a rigidly-mounted seven-speed dual clutch transmission, new aluminum
brake calipers, a stripped-out cabin and various aerodynamic enhancements.
