The all-new 2019 Kamiq small SUV made a late spy
debut, just as Skoda is gearing up for the model’s world premiere at the Geneva
Motor Show next month. The prototypes spotted by Carscoops photographers don’t carry too much
camouflage, but don’t get fooled by their appearance: Skoda is using a special
type of disguise to hide the shape of the headlights and taillights.
A closer look reveals some padding on
the sides as well, just below the lateral windows, at the lower part of the
doors, and about half of the third lateral window as well. The grille is also
obscured by black tape, but the overall shape of the small SUV is hard to hide.
The European Kamiq is totally unrelated to the
Chinese-market Kamiq that launched last year and is longer than even the Karoq.
As a result, it features a different design, with two-piece headlights at the
front inspired by the Vision X concept vehicle and boomerang-shaped taillights
at the rear.
As for the interior, Skoda has already released the
first photos which reveal a striking resemblance with the cabin of the Scala
compact hatchback. That’s not surprising, since the Kamiq uses the same MQB-A0
platform as the Scala and other VW Group small SUV such as the Seat Arona and
VW T-Cross.
It will feature a similar engine lineup
as the Scala. Expect turbocharged TSI 1.0-liter three-cylinder and 1.5-liter
four-cylinder gasoline units with outputs ranging from 90 PS to 150 PS, as well as a 1.6-liter TDI four-cylinder turbodiesel and, maybe, a
CNG version of the 1.0-liter gasoline engine.
The new Kamiq will launch at the Geneva Motor Show
early next month as Skoda’s smallest SUV that will slot below the Karoq in the
automaker’s European lineup.
