It’s been a long time since we last saw the
third-generation Bentley Flying Spur during testing. Spotted in Scandinavia near the Arctic Circle during cold
weather testing, the 2020 Flying Spur has lost most plastic padding although
it’s cleverly disguised, particularly at the front and rear.
Still, the new spy shots give us the clearest look
yet at the Continental GT’s four-door sibling, which now features the final
production lights underneath that annoying disguise. The lines also appear
clearer now, revealing a pair of haunches that are more muscular than ever, new
bumpers, and a raised boot lid compared to the car’s shoulder line.
While the front end appears similar to the
Continental GT’s, the rear will adopt different taillights with a rectangular
shape. From what we can see, the Flying Spur is shaping up to be a really
elegant looking sedan.
Unfortunately, Carscoops photographers weren’t able to
take a peek at the cabin but if previous Flying Spurs are any indication, the
third-generation model should share the dashboard with the Continental GT.
However, some reports say Bentley aims to differentiate the two models more
than before, with the sedan getting a different interior.
Under the aluminum skin, the 2020 Flying Spur will
feature the same platform as the latest Porsche Panamera. However, Bentley uses
a slightly longer version of the MSB architecture called MSB-F. While that
allows for a longer wheelbase, it remains a rear- and all-wheel-drive platform
that makes the Flying Spur slightly lighter than its predecessor and gives it
new tech, including autonomous driving systems.
Expect a similar engine lineup to the Panamera,
including a 2.9-liter V6 plug-in hybrid with an EV range of around 48
km that will allow Bentley to stay away from diesels. 4.0-liter V8 and
6.0-liter W12 gasoline engines will also be on offer. The all-new Flying Spur
is likely to debut in mid-2019.
