The Nissan Versa doesn’t exactly get the heart
racing, but it’s one of the most affordable sedans in the United States. The company is working on an
all-new model and spy photographers recently snapped a heavily camouflaged
prototype undergoing testing. The disguise hides a number of details, but we
can see the redesigned model will have a new front fascia with angular
headlights.
Bigger changes occur further back, as the 2020 Versa
adopts curvaceous bodywork and a more rakish windscreen. The greenhouse is also
a tad sportier as there’s an upward sweeping beltline and a more dynamic
roofline. Other notable changes include a flowing character line and new
door-mounted side mirrors.
The current model’s taillights have been jettisoned
and replaced by more conventional units which echo the Altima and Maxima.
Additional details are hard to make out, but it appears the sedan will have a
rounder rear bumper and a more modern trunk. The prototype’s interior is
covered up, but we can expect significant upgrades. There’s no word on
specifics, but we couldn’t be surprised if the model has higher quality
materials and an updated infotainment system.
Powertrain details remain exclusive, but the current
Versa has a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 109 hp and 145 Nm of torque. It can be paired to either a five-speed
manual or an optional continuously variable transmission. While nothing is official, it’s
possible the next-generation Versa will use the same 1.6-liter four-cylinder
engine that powers the Kicks. It produces 122 hp and 154 Nm of torque which would result in a modest gain of 13 hp and 9 Nm.
