The 2020 Nissan Versa made its spy photo debut
earlier this month and now the automaker has confirmed the “completely
redesigned” model will be unveiled on April 12th. In an interesting twist, Nissan
will introduce the car at Rock the Ocean’s Tortuga Music Festival in Ft.
Lauderdale, Florida. It’s an unusual location for a vehicle unveiling, but the
event has a country music theme – as headliners include Jason Aldean and Kenny
Chesney – and this could be a subtle nod to Nissan’s close ties to Tennessee.
Regardless, the 2020 Versa promises to be a big
improvement over its predecessor as the model will have a more stylish and
upscale design. A number of cues will be taken from the Altima and spy photos
have shown the car will have angular headlights and a more rakish windscreen.
Bigger changes occur behind the A-pillar as the
Versa gains flowing bodywork and an upward sweeping beltline. Other highlights
include a more dynamic roofline, a sportier greenhouse and a modern rear end
with slender taillights.
Nissan was tight-lipped about details, but power
will likely be provided by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 122
hp and 154 Nm of torque. If this is the case, the
2020 Versa will have 13 hp and 9 Nm of torque more
than its predecessor. The engine will send power to the front wheels and a continuously
variable transmission is a given. It remains unclear if Nissan will continue to
offer a manual gearbox, but the current Versa has a five-speed stick.
