Launched in late 2015, the Opel/Vauxhall Astra K is
quickly approaching the mid-life makeover. We first got proof of that a year
ago when our photographers spotted a prototype featuring heavy plastic
camouflage at the front. Now, the facelifted Astra returns for a new photo
shoot, this time sporting the final production front bumper that’s covered in a
less obtrusive foil.
To say that the styling changes over the current
model will be minor would be an understatement — in this prototype, it’s quite
hard to spot meaningful updates. Unless, that is, Opel is sandbagging and that
camouflage hides a substantial makeover. However, we can still make out some
details like the updated headlights with new graphics, revised grille, and new
front bumper.
At the rear, the only visible modification is the
new LED signature of the taillights, which also appear to feature a darker
treatment. Our photographers managed to take a photo of the interior as well,
but the shot doesn’t reveal anything new. Still, the facelifted Astra could
bring some upgrades to the infotainment system as well as new safety tech to
keep the compact model up to date with its rivals.
Since PSA took over Opel and Vauxhall, it began
rolling out its own engines on models such as the Grandland X and Crossland X –
which wasn’t that hard, since both crossovers share platforms with PSA models.
In the Astra’s case, the facelift would be a great
opportunity for the compact car to get PSA powertrains that would replace the
GM-era units, unless the parent company decides to wait until 2021 when the
all-new Astra will shift to the EMP2 platform that will also allow for
electrification. Expect the facelifted Astra to debut in the following months at a
standalone event, as Opel will skip this fall’s Frankfurt Auto Show.
