Mercedes has commenced production of the facelifted
AMG GT at its Sindelfingen plant in Germany. The first vehicle to roll off the
assembly line was a Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro, the new track-focused flagship that
draws inspiration from the carmaker’s AMG GT3 and GT4 racing cars. The Pro is a
limited edition model that features many modifications over the already
hardcore AMG GT R.
Those include a new suspension, enhanced
aerodynamics and an optimized power-to-weight ratio thanks to the addition of
lightweight bucket seats and lightweight wheels. All the changes are aimed at
making the AMG GT R Pro shine even more on the racetrack. Like the “regular” AMG GT R, the
Pro is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that makes 577 hp and 699 Nm of torque between 1,900 rpm and 5,500 rpm.
Elsewhere in the sports car’s lineup, the facelift
brings updates to the exterior design as well as more agility thanks to new
features such as the integrated AMG Dynamics handling control and new AMG
Performance steering wheel. Inside, highlights include a center console with
innovative display buttons and a fully digital instrument cluster.
Manufacturing the Mercedes-AMG GT involves a high
degree of top-quality hand finishing, as many processes are made by hand. The
workers are among Mercedes’ most qualified and are trained to build all
variants of the AMG GT.
Affalterbach’s standalone model comes with three
different types of roofs (fabric top, carbon fiber and glass), two body styles
(Coupe and Roadster), four distinct versions (GT, GT S, GT C, GT R), a special
edition (GT R Pro) and countless exclusive options. The components are supplied
to the flexible production line as “packages” tailored to each vehicle being
assembled.
Besides the Mercedes-AMG GT, the Sindelfingen plant
builds the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, S-Class, E-Class, CLS, Mercedes-Maybach and
GLA. In the future, the site will also build electric vehicles for Daimler’s
new EQ sub-brand.
