Orders books for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS have
been opened in Europe where the “S-Class among SUVs” will be
offered in diesel form only. Sitting at the base of the range will be the Mercedes-Benz GLS 350 d
4MATIC, powered by a 2.9-liter inline-six turbo diesel with 282 hp and 600 Nm of torque. It requires 7-seconds to reach 100 km/h,
runs through to a top speed of 227 km/h and consumes between 7.6- and
7.9-liters of fuel per 100 km, while combined CO2 emissions sit between 200 and
208 grams/km. Prices for the GLS 350 d 4MATIC start at 85,923 euros (US$ 96,412).
As for the second model in the range, it is the GLS
400 d 4MATIC. It uses the same 2.9-liter inline-six as the 350 d, but with 325
hp and 700 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption is identical to the GLS
350d 4MATIC, but the 0-100 km/h sprint takes 6.3 seconds and max
speed is 238 km/h top speed. The range-topping, for now, GLS starts
at 90,386 euros (US$ 101,421).
All 2020 GLS models sold in Europe come as standard
in a seven-seat configuration with a bench seat in the middle row and two
additional seats at the rear. Customers have the option of making the GLS a
six-seater by ditching the middle bench in favor of two large individual seats.
To ensure passengers remain comfortable at all
times, the new full-size luxury SUV can be optioned with the 2,118 euro
(US$2,376) Rear Comfort Package Plus that consists of an extended center conso le
with cup holders, luxury head restraints, adjustable side bolsters, and a
luxury armrest for the second seat row.
Other interior options aimed at improving comfort
include rear multi-contour seats with massage functions, seat heating for the
second and third row, seat climate control in the second row and
temperature-controlled cup holders. Additionally, there is the MBUX Rear Seat
Entertainment package, which adds two 11.6-inch touchscreen displays to the
second row and costs 2,796 euros (US$ 3,136).
The options list doesn’t stop there. For example,
the GLS can be equipped with the 4,742 euro (US$ ,5320) Energizing Package Plus
which adds multi-contour seats for the driver and front passenger with massage
functions. Additionally, the package includes air balancing to fragrance, ionize,
