Toyota is entering the European compact van segment with the all-new Proace City, a model that should definitely remind you of a few other vehicles from this class. That’s because it shares underpinnings with PSA’s armada of compact vans that includes the Peugeot Partner, Citroën Berlingo, and Opel/Vauxhall Combo. it will also be built by PSA alongside the Partner and Berlingo at its Vigo plant in Spain.

Making its world debut on April 30 at the 2019 Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, the Toyota Proace City will be available in two lengths (4.4 meters and 4.7 meters) as well as three body styles (panel van, crew cab van, and passenger van). The latter version is called Proace City Verso and is offered with five or seven seats, both in the short and long version.


As with its other PSA siblings, the Proace City offers a maximum volume ranging from 3.3 cubic meters for the short model, to 4.3 cubic meters for the long model with the Smart Cargo option. This makes the Proace City one of the few vehicles in its class that can carry two Euro pallets.

With the Smart Cargo option, which features a folding outer passenger seat and a hatch in the bulkhead, the Toyota Proace City is also said to offer best-in-class load length capability of 3.1 meters for the short version and 3.4 meters for the long version. As for maximum payload, both Proace City versions can carry one tonne.


Customers can opt for gasoline and diesel powertrains with outputs ranging from 75 PS to 130 PS. Transmission choices include five- or six-speed manuals and an eight-speed automatic. Standard safety features include a Pre-Collision System, Road Sign Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Cruise Control, and a driver drowsiness detection system. Optional tech includes Automatic High Beam, Sway Warning, extended Road Sign Assist system, Adaptive Cruise Control, and a Blind Spot Monitor.

The PSA-built Toyota Proace City will go on sale across Europe in early 2020.
