An image of the production version of the
991-generation Porsche 911 Speedster, which is set to make its official
appearance at the forthcoming New York Auto Show, has been leaked by Carbuzz.
Though the image is in black and white, the car appears to be the newer
iteration shown previously at the Paris Motor Show last year, with cross-spoke
wheels, revised from the Fuchs units from the earlier version.
This will be the tail-end of 991-generation cars and
will be based on the facelifted 991 GT3 chassis and powertrain, with the
automaker’s naturally aspirated 4.0 litre flat-six boasting of 500 hp and a
9,000 rpm rev ceiling, driving the rear wheels via a six-speed manual
transmission. The previous, 997-generation Speedster was instead based upon the
regular-series Carrera.
Design cues specific to the Speedster include the
shorter windscreen with shorter side windows, double bubble rear deck, slats
between the two humps and a carbon-fibre cover on top of the roll-over
protection structure. The fuel filler cap is positioned centrally on the
Speedster’s bonnet while ‘Talbot’-shaped side mirrors replace the standard
items, and rolling stock is comprised of 21-inch wheels.
In contrast with the first 991-generation Speedster
Concept, the revised car features a black leather interior with red highlights,
whereas the earlier version used ‘Heritage’ styling with light brown aniline
leather. The production 911 Speedster will also be the first model to be
offered with Porsche’s Heritage Design packages.
Production limited to numbers significant to Porsche
is the name of the game. The 991 Speedster is no different, slated for a run of
1,948 units, named after the year the first Porsche 356 Roadster received its
operating permit. The 997-generation Speedster was limited to 356 units, while
the pre-facelift 911 R was limited to 991 units.
