Volkswagen will unveil a flagship
electric SUV at the Shanghai Auto Show (April 16-April 24) and today we get the
first preview. It’s called the ID Roomzz (not the ID Lounge as previously reported)
and it’s a concept vehicle that heralds the next member of the ID family. The
study previews a big electric SUV that will hit the Chinese market first in
2021. VW doesn’t say it but the ID Roomzz could be offered in other markets as
well after its debut in China.
As with all the other members of the ID lineup
revealed so far (ID hatch, ID Crozz, ID Buzz, ID Vizzion, and ID Buggy), the ID
Roomzz is built on VW Group’s Modular electric drive matrix (MEB). If you wonder where the new
concept’s name comes from, VW says it’s a reference to the vehicle’s
variability of the interior. The automaker describes the concept as a
“multi-variable all-round model” that boasts “completely new seat
configurations, high-quality materials, and customizable light.”
According to the automaker, the electric SUV study
features a number of innovations on board and is capable of Level 4 autonomous
driving, requiring no active driver in ID Pilot mode.
Looking at the design sketch, the ID Roomzz features
a similar front end design to the ID Crozz, while the suicide doors and sloping
roofline give it a coupe-like profile. The creases on the hood, the muscular
haunches, and the bulged front fenders make it look more aggressive than the ID
Crozz, though.
