A prototype for the 2020 Lexus GX has been spotted
making rounds in Southern California, and as seen in the photos here, the test
mule’s overall design doesn’t appear to be any different from the outgoing model.
Instead, just the front face, which is obviously covered in black masking, will
get updated.
Upon closer inspection, it appears that Lexus’
trademark spindle grille will grow in size. The headlights too, will be
revised, possibly featuring three projector LED units. Elsewhere, things remain
largely the same – the side steps, wing mirror, LED tail lights, and rear
bumper appear identical.
Inside, changes are also kept to a minimum. Based on
the spy photos, the only component that appears different is the steering wheel
– the facelifted model will get the newer three-spoke item, which is seen on
the RX. The existing eight-inch touchscreen display with reverse camera looks
to be carried over.
Under the bonnet, the GX should be powered by the
same 1UR-FE 4.6 litre V8 petrol engine from before. It makes 301 hp and 446 Nm
of torque, and is rumoured to be paired with the brand’s latest 10-speed Direct
Shift automatic, thereby retiring the older A760F six-speed auto. The gearbox
is said to be fitted to all rear-wheel drive Lexus models, including the 4×4
GX.
For those who are unfamiliar with the GX, it’s
essentially a glitzier version of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Engine options
for the Toyota include the new 2.8 litre D-4D turbodiesel with 177 hp and 450
Nm (for western Europe), a 161 hp/246 Nm 2.7 VVT-i petrol inline-four engine
(for eastern Europe) and a 249 hp/381 Nm 4.0 litre V6 VVT-i petrol mill.
Features include Rear Adjustable Height Control
(AHC) air suspension with Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system and
Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Crawl Control system (taken from the LX 570),
Downhill Assist Control (DAC), and Active Traction Control (A-TRAC).
