The next-gen Mahindra Scorpio (codename: Mahindra
Z101) has been spied undergoing road testing again. Fresh spy shots published
by ZigWheels captured during this test run give the clearest look yet at the
future model's front fascia.
The 2020 Mahindra Scorpio will be longer and wider
in size. At the front sits a taller, 7-slot radiator grille flanked by more
contemporary headlamps. The lower grille and bumper also have a new look. The
headlamps seen here are provisionary, but the actual units going into the
production model will undoubtedly have a new design. Unlike the current model,
the all-new model doesn't appear to have a hood scoop.
The all-new Mahindra Scorpio is expected to feature
a stepped roofline and Scorpio branding on the lower side of the rear doors. It
appears to have a longer front overhang. At the back, the tail lamps seen on
the test mule appears to be tiny, and sits a fully redesigned tailgate and
smaller, more rakish glass. While the current model has an upright stance, the
all-new model is a little hunchback, thanks to a slightly raked rear glass, and
that gives it a more contemporary look. The interior, too, will be fully
redesigned.
While some reports say that the all-new Mahindra
Scorpio will be based on a newly-developed platform, some say that it will sit
on an updated chassis. The next-gen Mahindra Thar will use the same
underpinnings. Like the Mahindra Marazzo, this model has been developed by the
Mahindra North American Technical Center (MNATC).
Under the hood, there will be an all-new, BS-VI
compliant 2.0-litre diesel engine that will be 80 kg lighter than the 2.2-litre
mHawk diesel engine of the outgoing model. It is expected to deliver a maximum
power of 160 PS and come with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission
choices. A 4WD system could be offered as an option. The next-gen Scorpio could have a
starting price of somewhere between INR 10-11 lakh (ex-showroom). It will
likely arrive after the next-gen Mahindra Thar, which is expected to debut at
Auto Expo 2020.
