Mahindra's first all-new model launch following the XUV300 will be the next-gen Thar, in early 2020. Unlike the current model, the next-gen model will be available with a hard top, spy shots posted on Facebook group 4x4 India have revealed.

The next-gen Mahindra Thar will reportedly share an updated ladder-frame chassis with the next-gen Mahindra Scorpio. It will feature an evolutionary design and likely be longer and wider. While a more family-oriented, 5-door version seems to be out of the question, two different roof options are planned. Spy shots hint new doors with handles positioned lower for easier ingress as well.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar will have a newer suspension setup (with less travel) at the front for a more comfortable drive on the roads. It will also make use of a wider track than the outgoing model, without featuring an independent rear suspension. On the inside, it will be more luxury oriented than the outgoing utilitarian SUV and have a fully designed dashboard, new multi-function steering wheel, new instrument panel with an MID and maybe even a touchscreen infotainment system. The interior has already leaked partially.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar is said to employ a newly developed, 140 PS 2.0-litre diesel engine that will be compliant with the BS-VI emission norms that come into effect on 1 April 2019. It is expected to make its public debut at the upcoming Auto Expo 2020. It will rival the next-gen Force Gurkha, which will likely debut at the same event.
