BMW has announced plans to introduce an assortment
of emergency vehicles at RETTmobil 2019. The star of this year’s show is a
“stealth” police car based on the all-new 3-Series. As the name suggests, the car
looks fairly ordinary as it has hidden flashers in the grille and a “magnetic
flashing light” that can be removed from the roof. Even the controls for the
lights and siren are hidden in what appears to be an ashtray.
While most police cars wouldn’t be considered
luxurious, this model comes nicely equipped with heated sports seats, a
leather-wrapped M steering wheel and the Professional business package. The car
also has LED headlights, Park Distance Control and Driving Assistant.
In terms of performance, the model is equipped with
a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that produces 187 hp and 400 Nm of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed
automatic transmission which sends power to an all-wheel drive system. This
allows the sedan to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds,
before hitting a top speed of 233 km/h. Besides the 3-Series, BMW will
showcase a 2-Series Gran Tourer for emergency medics. Dressed in an orange and
white livery, the MPV has an emergency light bar and flashing lights in the
grille.
Since the model is based on the 220d xDrive Gran
Tourer, it shares the same powertrain as the aforementioned 3-Series. However,
it’s significantly slower as the dash from 0-100 km/h takes 7.8
seconds and the top speed is 218 km/h.
On the crossover side, BMW will showcase an X1 fire
command vehicle. It features many of the same modifications as the 2-Series
Gran Tourer, but adopts a red and white livery. Based on the X1 xDrive18d, the
model has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine with 148 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Thanks to an eight-speed automatic
transmission and an all-wheel drive system, the crossover can run from 0-100 km/h in approximately 9.3 seconds before topping out at around 205 km/h.
BMW will also introduce a handful of other models
including an X3 xDrive20d for emergency medics and an F 750 GS motorcycle for
fire department use. There will also be an i8 TUNE IT! SAFE! police car which
promotes safe and responsible tuning.
