The second-gen
Mahindra Thar with hard top has been spied during its road testing yet again,
courtesy WheelsGreed. The all-new Mahindra Thar will be sharing an updated
ladder-frame chassis with the 2020 Mahindra Scorpio. It will be slightly longer
and wider in terms of overall dimensions and feature an evolutionary design.
At the front, the
next-gen Mahindra Thar features a signature seven-slot vertical grille flanked
by round headlamps taken over from the original model. These headlights will be
same halogen units, and LEDs will be given a miss in order to keep the overall
costs under check. Other than this, it will also carry design inspiration from
the current model in the form of front-fender-mounted turn indicators and an
upright windscreen. At the rear, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will be kitted with a
spare wheel bolted on to the side-hinged tailgate, as seen on the outgoing
model.
The all-new
Mahindra Thar will pass the stringent BNVSAP crash test norms thanks to its
more robust construction and enhanced design. It will also be equipped with
additional standard features such as driver airbag, rear parking sensors, speed
alert system and more in accordance with the AIS 145 safety norms which will be
seen in action from 1 July 2019.
Interior spy shots
have revealed that the 2020 Mahindra Thar will feature a multi-function
steering wheel, a big MID placed between the dials of the instrument panel and
a new dashboard layout with a provision for an infotainment system. The cabin will
be more comfortable and family-oriented.
Under the hood,
there will be a BS-VI 2.0-litre diesel engine tuned to produce 140 PS of
maximum power and 300 Nm of peak torque. A 6-speed manual transmission will be
standard, while a manually operated 4WD system should be optional. The next-gen
Mahindra Thar is expected to debut at Auto Expo 2020 and it will be pitted
against its arch rival next-gen Force Gurkha which is also likely to be
unveiled at the same event.
