Mercedes-Benz’s redesigned compact model family is
almost complete but there’s still one model that hasn’t been unveiled yet. We’re talking about the bodystyle
that has the potential to become the best-selling nameplate of them all, the
GLA compact crossover. Sure, the Mercedes-Benz GLB looks set to be a highly
successful model as well, but the GLA might have the edge over its boxier
sibling given that it should be cheaper.
We’ve already seen next-generation GLA prototypes
during testing and the general impression is that we’re dealing with a
jacked-up A-Class from a styling standpoint. That’s hardly surprising since the
same was said about the first-generation GLA.
Now we’ve come across a new set of spy shots that
give us the first look inside the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA, revealing the close
connection to the A-Class. Basically, we’re looking at the same dashboard
dominated by the MBUX infotainment system’s Widescreen Cockpit display. The steering wheel is identical
too, as are the turbine-style air vents and center console. Obviously, we
should ignore the big screen located in front of the climate control area as
it’s there for testing purposes only.
On the outside, the 2020 GLA continues to be
completely covered in camouflage but that can’t disguise the fact that it will
look very similar to the A-Class, bar the increased ride height and SUV-like
elements. Expect more rugged details such as plastic cladding surrounding the
wheel arches and the beefier bumpers, as well as skid plates under the bumpers.
The second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA should offer
the same assortment of turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines as the A-Class
in Europe, including the new 1.3-liter petrol unit developed together with
Renault. AMG-branded GLA 35 and GLA 45 versions should also become available
with up to 302 hp and 416 hp, respectively.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLA will debut at the
Frankfurt Motor Show in September with sales likely to begin before the end of
the year.
