Earlier this year, we spotted a prototype of the
2020 Pajero Sport SUV in Sweden where it was undergoing cold weather testing. Now it’s time to see more of the
facelifted body-on-frame SUV courtesy of Mitsubishi itself. The automaker has
released the first photo of the L200-based 2020 Pajero Sport ahead of the
model’s reveal in Thailand on July 25.
The image shows the front end of the SUV – and
there’s nothing surprising in that area from a design standpoint. The
facelifted Pajero Sport, known as the Shogun Sport in the UK and Montero Sport
in other markets, adopts a very similar face to the facelifted L200/Triton
pickup on which it’s based.
The Dynamic Shield design is transplanted on the
2020 Pajero Sport as well, with the grille and headlights looking identical —
minus the LED signature which is new on the SUV. The bumper, however, gets a
sportier design as opposed to the L200’s off-road look and the second pair of
lights located on the bumper appears to have a different shape as well. Mitsubishi did not talk specifics
about the updates brought by the 2020 Pajero Sport, but did say it will feature
improvements to its design, convenience, comfort, and quality.
Given the strong connection to the facelifted L200,
we can expect it to offer the same 2.4-liter turbo diesel which, in UK
specification, delivers 181 PS at 3,500 rpm and 430 Nm of
torque at 2,500 rpm. On the Shogun Sport, the engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic
transmission that sends power to all four wheels via the Super Select 4WD
system that also offers a low-range. Expect the 2020 Pajero Sport to get the
facelifted L200’s new off-road mode with Gravel, Mud/Snow, Sand, and Rock
settings too. Finally, the SUV could also get new safety tech sourced from the L200
such as Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic
Alert, Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation, and the Multi Around Monitor.
