On May 23, Skoda released the first photos and
information about the facelifted version of the Superb. Now, the VW-owned Czech automaker
has dropped the complete set of photos and illustrations of its revamped
flagship, which comes in more flavors and with more tech than ever.
Building on the already familiar saloon and Combi body styles, the 2020 Superb welcomes a high-riding Scout version for
the first time. Taking on the role of the most rugged member of the family, the
Scout, which is available exclusively as a wagon, joins the base model, the
sporty-flavored Sportline and the luxurious L&K version in the revised
lineup.
Another first is the addition of a plug-in hybrid
version, badged Superb iV. Scheduled to arrive by the end of the year, it’s
essentially the same powertrain from the VW Passat GTE. The Superb iV uses a
1.4-liter TSI gasoline engine and an 85 kW electric motor for
a total system output of 218 PS and 400 Nm of
available torque. There’s also a 13 kWh battery which allows for an electric
range of up to 55 km in the WLTP cycle.
The design updates are subtle but effective. On the
outside, the grille is now larger and protrudes a little further down into the
new front apron, while the headlights are narrower and now reach the grille.
More importantly, they offer LED technology as standard for the dipped and high
beam, DRLs, and position light. The shape of the LED fog lights has been
updated as well, while the rear features new LED taillights connected by a
chrome strip with “Skoda” block lettering above it. New 18- and 19-inch alloy
wheels and exterior colors have been added.
Inside, the 2020 Superb brings new seat covers,
colored contrasting stitching, chrome highlights, and illuminated storage
compartments in the doors. Also new are the standard KESSY Go start button and
the latest infotainment systems with 8-inch and 9.2-inch displays. As with the
exterior, the interior ambiance differs based on the trim level. The Superb
Scout, for example, comes with wood-effect decorative strips and seat covers
made of a specific fabric.
Technological highlights include the available LED
Matrix headlights and new assistance systems such as Predictive Cruise Control,
Side Assist, Emergency Assist for multi-lane roads, and Front Assist with
Predictive Pedestrian Protection.
Finally, it’s worth noting that the engine lineup
welcomes the new 2.0-liter TDI Evo engine with mild hybrid assistance, at first
in a state of tune of 150 PS. There are three diesels and three
gasoline engines to choose from, with the facelifted Superb offering a total of
ten different engine/drive combinations.
