McLaren doesn’t have any plans of joining the
bandwagon of high-performance SUVs, but is thought to be readying an
all-electric supercar to compete in this rapidly-growing niche of the
automotive market. The British car manufacturer has reportedly been working on an
all-electric model for quite some time and, while it remains to be seen what it
could look like, or when it will arrive, designer Daniel Platek has dreamt up
what form it could take.
The concept, dubbed the Concept E-Zero, takes design
inspiration from the McLaren M6GT from way back in 1969. This iconic vehicle
was meant to be the company’s very first road car and was based around the
chassis of an M6B racing car. Sadly, Bruce McLaren died on June 2, 1970 and his
vision of the M6GT hitting the streets never came to fruition.
The most obvious similarity between the Concept
E-Zero and the M6GT is the open-air feeling provided by the large glass canopy.
Viewed from the rear, the concept shares a number of design traits reminiscent
of existing production vehicles from the car manufacturer, including slim LED
taillights and a flowing rear diffuser.
Up front, you’ll find perhaps the most radical angle
of the car. The headlights are simple horizontal LED units incorporated into
faux air intakes in a design which could be seen as an evolution of the lights
found on the 720S. The hood of the concept is also very short, allowing for the
windshield to stretch beyond the front wheels. Platek imagines his study being
powered by no less than four electric motors and a large battery mounted under
the floor. The car looks excellent and has us very excited to see what
McLaren’s electric hypercar will look like.
