The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has been launched for the Indonesian market at the 2019 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). First revealed in February 2017, the MMC sports car name lives on, on an SUV that could be seen as a sportier version of the ASX compact crossover.

It measures 4,405 mm long, 1,805 mm wide and 1,685 mm tall, making it 110 mm longer, 35 mm wider and 60 mm taller than the ASX, although the 2,670 mm wheelbase remains. The shape was previewed by Mitsubishi’s XR-PHEV concepts from a few years back.

The front end carries the brand’s Dynamic Shield look, but it’s the rear end that’s unique. The Eclipse Cross’ LED tail lights stretches across the rear windscreen, which is split Honda CR-Z-style. The third brake light is situated along the dividing bar, and when illuminated it connects the tail lights, forming a single beam of light.

The red paint you see on this car is new for MMC, and features a semi-transparent red coat and a clear coat over the standard base coat to create high colour saturation and intensity, providing what Mitsubishi says is a “highly-refined finish.” This Red Diamond paint option carries a small price premium over black and pearl white, the other two exterior colours available here.

If the Eclipse Cross’ cabin appears familiar, you’ve seen it before on the Lexus NX, thanks to the appearance of a cliff-like centre console framed by silver metal trim pieces, and even the premium brand’s remote touch pad, which MMC calls touchpad controller. Under the hood is a 4B40 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder MIVEC engine putting out 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 3,500 rpm. Drive goes to the front wheels via an INVECS-III CVT with eight-speed manual mode and paddle shifters.

Mitsubishi is only selling one highly-specified Ultimate trim level in Indonesia. Standard equipment include projector LED headlamps, auto headlamps and wipers, 18-inch alloys (with 225/55 tyres), panoramic sunroof, electronic parking brake with auto hold, heated front seats, black leather upholstery with orange stitching, keyless entry and push start and a head-up display, among other things.

For safety, it’s seven airbags plus a suite of driver assist systems. The latter includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, auto high beam, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, hill start assist and ultrasonic misacceleration mitigation (prevents acceleration when there’s an obstacle ahead). There’s also MMC’s Active Yaw Control (AYC).

Lastly, prices. The Eclipse Cross is available in a single Ultimate spec, which starts from IDR 478 million for Amethyst Black. The Silky White option is IDR 481 million while the signature Red Diamond is the costliest at IDR 483 million.
