After seeing BMW’s 2020 4-Series Coupe on top of a transport truck multiple times last month, we can now attempt to better gauge the its overall road presence, as its wheels have finally touched the tarmac. Unfortunately, the camouflage is still there, so the car’s subtle design elements are well-hidden from view. Still, it does give off sort of a baby 8-Series vibe, given the shape of the front end and the flowing rear end design.

The head- and taillights appear to be production-ready, and when the car finally is unveiled, we expect it to look considerably more sexy than its more practical four-door counterpart, the 3-Series. Inside, you’ll find a driver-oriented dashboard design, featuring BMW’s latest available tech such as Operating System 7.0. The overall design will mirror that of the G20 3-Series, meaning two dominant screens, a three-spoke steering wheel and identical switchgear.


Regardless of which 4-Series version you opt for, be it the Coupe, Convertible or the Gran Coupe, all of its engine and transmission options will be sourced from the latest 3-Series. This means buyers will be able to choose between four- and six-cylinder turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid unit.

If you’ll want power to go to all four wheels, you’ll have to opt for the optional xDrive all-wheel drive system, which should come as standard on certain, more powerful variants. The top of the range model will of course be the M4, which is expected to feature a redesigned 3.0-liter twin turbocharged inline-six unit.

BMW’s all-new 4-Series is expected to arrive in dealerships sometime next year.
