Work continues on the 2020 BMW M2 CS as spy
photographers have caught a couple of prototypes undergoing testing. Snapped wearing heavy camouflage,
the high-performance coupe follows in the footsteps of the M2 Competition but
adopts a slightly more aggressive design.
The styling changes are hard to see at first glance,
but it appears the model will have a power dome hood and a more pronounced
front splitter. Moving further back, there are lightweight wheels that are
wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. They’re backed up by a
high-performance braking system with golden calipers and ventilated discs.
Additional changes are limited, but the car has a
larger rear spoiler. One of the prototypes also had peeling camouflage and this
confirmed the M2 CS will have a carbon fiber roof. The unique styling continues in
the cabin as there’s lightweight sport seats with cloth and leather upholstery.
We can also see an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and blue
contrast stitching.
BMW hasn’t said much about the car, but it’s
expected to have a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces
approximately 444 hp. If that number pans out, the model
would have 39 hp more than the M2 Competition. That doesn’t
sound like much, but the CS should also be lighter than its more mainstream
counterpart.
The engine can be paired to either a six-speed
manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. It’s likely that both will
enable the car to accelerate from 0-96 km/h in less than the four
seconds as the M2 Competition can hit 96 km/h in 4.2 seconds with the
manual and 4.0 seconds with the automatic. The M2 Competition is slated to
go into production early next year and volumes could be capped at 2,200 units.
