The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been spied during
a round of testing in Breckenridge, Colorado. These images, captured by
Carscoops reader Evan Solida, show a pair of S-Class prototypes under thick
camouflage while driving through the small ski resort town. As other spy shots
of the new S-Class have revealed, the vehicle is set to look quite a lot
different than the outgoing S-Class.
At the rear, not even the presence of camouflage can
hide the triangular-shaped taillights which the new S-Class is set to receive,
inspired by the lights of the CLS. To this writer’s eyes, the taillights of the
CLS don’t look tasteful so I’m not holding out much hope that they will be any
better on the new S-Class. Alongside the new taillights, the latest S-Class
will feature a different rear bumper design.
Previous spy shots have revealed that Mercedes-Benz
will also overhaul the vehicle’s front fascia with a new grille and full matrix
LED headlights. The car will also feature pop-out door handles.
Inside, huge modifications have been made. The
center console will be dominated by a huge, Tesla-like touchscreen while a
large horizontal digital gauge cluster will continue to be used. We have no
doubt that the new interior design will split opinions but if there’s one
company which can nail an interior, it would have to be Mercedes-Benz.
Numerous technologies will come fitted to the new
S-Class, including Level 3 semi-autonomous driving systems. Carscoops
understands that all new S-Class models will feature hybrid 2.9-liter and
3.0-liter petrol and diesel inline-sixes with some offering all-electric ranges
of up to 100 km. Future AMG-branded models, like the S 63, will
continue to feature the company’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine but likely
updated with 48-volt mild-hybrid tech.
We understand the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class will
premiere in 2020.
