The facelifted VW Transporter 6.1
lineup is now complete. VW has already begun taking advance orders in select European
countries ahead of the launch following this fall.
The high-end passenger version of the Transporter
6.1 adopts a new front end with a larger radiator grille, new bumper, and new
headlights — available as LEDs depending on specification. The facelifted
Multivan also introduces six new alloy wheel designs, six new exterior colors,
and seven two-tone paintwork finishes.
Bigger changes take place inside as the 2020 VW
Multivan adopts the Digital Cockpit as an option as well as the latest Modular
Infotainment Matrix systems (MIB2 and MIB3). All infotainment systems are
connected as standard with an online connectivity unit (OCU) that features an
integrated eSIM enabling Internet-based functions and services.
VW has also redesigned the steering wheels, which
include a new multifunction unit with a View button that enables the driver to
switch between the Digital Cockpit’s different display configurations. In terms
of practicality, the VW Multivan 6.1 gains an additional shelf in front of the
driver and a larger open storage bin and extra shelf in front of the passenger.
Also new are the cup holders near the A-pillars as well as a larger tray for a
smartphone that can optionally feature an inductive interface for charging.
Technology-wise, the biggest change is the switch to
electro-mechanical power steering which reduces fuel consumption and opens up
access to an array of new driver assistance systems. Those include Lane Assist,
Park Assist, Trailer Assist, and more. Standard safety systems include Rear
Traffic Alert and Cross Wind Assist, among other features.
The facelifted VW Multivan also gains optional
extras such as the second-generation chassis control system (DCC), adaptive
cruise control (ACC) with stop-and-go function (only with DSG), as well as the
XDS electronic differential lock.
The all-diesel engine lineup includes four power
plants with a 2.0-liter displacement and 90 PS, 110 PS, 150 PS, and 199 PS. The latter two engines can be combined with
4Motion all-wheel drive and a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic
transmission (standard on the 199 PS engine). The 90 PS and 110 PS unit are only
offered with a five-speed manual gearbox while the 150 PS powertrain is mated
as standard with a six-speed manual.
Prices in Germany start from € 22,950 (US$ 25,430) for the Transporter panel van with the 90 PS engine and € 31,000
(US$ 34,350) for the Multivan Family with the 110 PS unit.
